Why do I get the error:

Not enough memory

when trying to edit the !Run file in Bernard Veasey's !MyComp banner app?

Trying to erase or insert the supplied text gives the error.
A plain text file works just fine if that helps.

I am running this on a Pi 4te2 with 4G of memory!!!!
RiscOS 5.29 (19-Feb-21) and !StrongEd 4.69f44 (29-Apr-2019)

Don't you need StrongED 4.70a14 on the Pi 4, if you have 4GB RAM? Otherwise
it does indeed complain about a lack of RAM.

Thank you Steve for that.

I went to the StrongEd page and at first could only find 4.69 but clicking
on the test release I have now downloaded 4.7

I have now successfully eited the obey file.
I was using the version installed on the 4te2 by R-Comp.
It seems strange that R-Comp do not install version 4.7...

R-Comp are aware of the issue, but as you discovered 4.70a14 is offically
a test version, and I think the author does not want it on more general
release yet. So Catch 22.

of memory. It edits !MyComp.!Run perfectly well without any problems.

Thank you Bernard
I will haave to get to grips with Zap
I have got used to StrongEd's ways and was hoping
to stay with it. Version 4.7 still gives not enough memory with trying to
replace text I'm afraid... Oh well....

Edit would very probably work for the job. :-)

It would help Fred Graute, the developer if you let him know of the issues
you are having as he may have another test version available, do remember
test versions are just that test ones with possible bugs still in them.
They don't get fixed unless they get told of the issues.

StrongED 4.70a14 does resolve the "Not enough memory" issue on machines with
greater the 2GB. It is, however, not available directly from the StrongED
website but is at the link below.

Thankyou David, I have downloaded se470a14 and replaced th se470a13
that I found as the "test version" on the StrongEd site.

I have just used this version to alter a csv file and erasing text no
longer gives the "Not enough memory" error.

I also experienced some weird Find & Replace problems that are now
banished and yield the expected results.

I would suggest sticking with StrongED: Zap has many crashy issues all of
its own, and isn't being actively developed because there's no will amongst
the RISC OS community to support an effort to clarify its licence status.

StrongED, on the other hand, already has a clear, Open licence *and* an
active maintainer. The latest version does work on the Pi 4, but isn't yet
visibly distributed as I *think* there are some other unrelated issues to
track down amongst the new features compared to 4.69 (see discussions on the
StrongED mailing list passim).

If 4.70 is still crashing for you, then either you haven't got a14 (see
David's link) or you should report it to Fred with the necessary steps to
reproduce the problem, so that it can be investigated and fixed.

I'll leave the question of why 4.69 is being included on a disc image for a
Pi 4, when it is known not to work well on that hardware platform... :-(

Steve thank you once again, I really did not like zap when it first came
out and I shall not be using it in future..
